Associate of The RPS (ARPS)

Requires a body of work/project of 15 images of a high standard and a written Statement of Intent. On this page you will find all you need to apply for an ARPS.

At this stage creative ability and personal style (what makes your work unique to you), along with complete control of the technical aspects of photography must be evident.  It is at this level that you can first choose to submit your work to a particular category:

  • Applied Photography inc. Documentary: Photography which has a specific end purpose or use. This includes professional photography, portraiture, theatrical, record, architectural, wedding, visual journalism, sport.
  • Conceptual and Contemporary Photography: Photography which explores, defines, illustrates or evaluates issues through photographic images.
  • Film: The work can be created in any moving image format including film, video, and digital media.
  • Fine Art Photography: Photography produced to fulfil the creative vision of the photographer in expressing and sharing perceptions or emotions.
  • Multimedia: encompasses Audio Visual, Film and Television and interactive multimedia. Multi platform work should be submitted in this category.
  • Natural History Photography: Includes all branches of natural history, including zoology and botany.
  • Research, Education and Application of Photography: as a general rule, applications will be by way of a written paper.
  • Science photography: includes scientific and medical imaging, medical photography or other related discipline by the submission of a portfolio.
  • Travel Photography: Photography with no geographical limitations, and should express the feeling of a time and place, and portray a land, its people or culture.

Unsure which category you are? Send 6 to10 images category@rps.org with your statement of intent and we will be happy to advise you which would be the best category. The statement of intent can dictate the category.

It is possible to apply for an ARPS without having first achieved an LRPS, but we do not recommend this unless you have considerable experience in photography.
